Pontelatone is comprised of forty small partners joining their very old vineyards, some of them dating back to the beginning of last century. These old vineyards were mostly cultivated under the local method of "spalliera alta" and later reverted with more qualitative criterions. They are split up into small parcels and are rigorously managed by traditional methods, without any mechanization. Pontelatone is in the center of the area where the Casavecchia grape grows. Casavecchia is an extraordinary grape variety, connected to numerous local legends, and was recently listed in the national bulletin board of the vines. Moreover, together with the Casavecchia, two other varieties strictly linked to the local traditions, are emerging: Pallagrello Bianco and the Pallagrello Nero. Heading up the cooperative, Alfonso Cutillo, mayor of Pontelatone, is one of the most important craftsmen dedicated to the rediscovery and the regeneration of the Casavecchia variety. His is supported as well by local professionals and by a Tuscan oenolog, Maurizio Alongi. |
